NO EXCUSES FOR ANTI-SEMITISM

I vehemently disagree with the views expressed in the letter by Simone Aspis “FAITH SCHOOLS THE ISSUE” published in last week’s edition (Jewish News, 14 September).

The main point stated was “The increasing incidence of anti-Semitism is due to increased enrollment of Jewish pupils attending faith-based schools.”

Anti-Semitism is racism, pure and simple. This evil concept and behaviour, has blighted humanity for thousands of years. It has been visited upon all types of Jews, under all circumstances and wherever they have chosen to live, or following persecution - found refuge and subsequently built up their lives again. Nothing in life justifies racism even though countless reasons have been advanced as apologies for its existence.

Simone, we can expect the next generation NOT TO BE ANTI-SEMITIC if they are properly educated (at whichever type of schools they attend) and also learn at home that; racism is abhorrent, deeply divisive, and in a world where so many of our previously accepted values are open to consideration, WRONG AT ALL LEVELS.

After the horror of the Holocaust and other recent genocides in our lifetime, every child should grow up to reject racism – outright. That is right, anti-Semitism is wrong.

AIRBNB - A FOUL SMELL IN THE AIR

My comments refer to the front-page headline “ISRAEL TO SANCTION AIRBNB OVER ‘DISCRIMINATORY’ RULING,” (The Jewish Weekly, 22 November). The article quoted that “Israel is considering tax sanctions and legal action against Airbnb over its controversial decision to ban listings from ‘occupied West Bank’ settlements.”

This Company operates in countless countries in which there are quite a few disputed territories. Consequently, this announcement has the “air of a selective boycott,” against one country in the world, and smacks of hypocrisy. Only when it comes to Israel, have Airbnb decided to remove about 200 homes, from its website, that are in the territories, which the Company maintains are at the core of the dispute between Israelis and Palestinians. Why has Airbnb chosen this time in particular, to take such action?

Israel is right to take action against this Company, and in whatever form, let us hope that it succeeds in bringing Airbnb to their senses. This move by Airbnb is yet one more example of the double standards applied to Israel as compared to any other nation state.

Airbnb has now set a precedent – so I wait to read of similar action being taken with regard to their listings in many other parts of the world. However, I won’t hold be holding my breath.

Maybe Airbnb will recant and rescind this decision. Now that would be a breath of fresh air.

A SAFE FUTURE FOR THE STATE OF ISRAEL

I refer to the COMMENT by Maya Illany “This move affirms Israel’s legitimacy,” in last week’s edition (JC, 23 November). Her article was about Airbnb’s recent decision to remove it’s listings for Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

My attention was drawn to the last paragraph in which she says that “the only way that Israel has a safe future as a Jewish and democratic state is by ending the occupation and reaching an agreement with the Palestians.” I fully agree but with which Palestinians is she referring to? The current leaders have no interest in reaching any agreement with Israel – indeed; Hamas is dedicated to the destruction of our Homeland!

The Palestinians leaders need to be ready to reach an agreement with Israel – a State that, at present, they don’t recognise as having any right to exist!

LET'S ANSWER THIS QUESTION ABOUT BEING A JEW

I was initially interested, then very surprised, and finally pleased to have read one particular sentence in Michael Edward’s letter published in last week’s edition (Jewish News, 10 January), entitled “Stop hurling stones.”

He stated, “In any case, what’s so special about being a Jew?” Maybe readers could be invited to provide concise answers and one letter selected, published each week. Alternatively, or in addition, the Jewish News’ journalists might wish to run a weekly series of answers. This question, presents an opportunity for the Jewish News to build up a bank of answers drawn from Jews, right across the religious and any other spectrum, that comprise your readership.

I agree with Mr Edwards that in dealing with this question – we have no basis to assert that Jews are better than gentiles or any other people. However, special, among other things, means unique, historic, distinctive and noteworthy – which are reasonable benchmarks to use for this purpose.

I for one feel proud and privileged to be a Jew, and am happy to engage with anybody as to why this is the case.

SHORTER LITERARY FORMS

LETTERS, ACRONYMS, MAXIMS & POEM's

I hope that you can see the light of day via my LAMP's.

These shorter literary forms are one way, aside from books, to get the message out there.

GETTING THE MESSAGE OUT THERE

A maxim or acronym will often be the most appropriate way to convey the intended message to you.  At other times a poem, or letter addressed to someone/ organization, will better achieve this.

POEMS

THE MANCHESTER TERROR ATTACK

ALL TOGETHER AFTER MANCHESTER

Our world may feel less safe as we’re all reeling after

The latest terrorist atrocity

But what was recently inflicted upon the city of Manchester

Brought the best out of humanity

Such evil individuals will never succeed

However much they seek to bleed

The life out of wholly innocent people

Who they indiscriminately injure or kill

We’ll honour the names

The casualties

Of their dastardly aims

And activities

We’ve come together and resolved to live our lives

As we choose to

Never for a moment allowing them to dehumanize

The likes of me and you

That’s the best response after

What happened in Manchester

ISRAEL RIGHT!

Israel has a right to exist

World leaders recognized this

Officially back in 1948

When the modern state

Was created

Just seven decades later

Many countries criticize her

Some actively demonize her

A few refuse to recognize her

As they would rather

That she compromises her

Continually threatened independence and security

Surrounded as she is by hostile territory

Yet going forward

Is a vital bulwark

Against violent, Islamist terrorist groups and regimes

That many countries in the world, it seems

Confer open

Support upon

Israel should be

Treated

Respected

Protected

Just like any other country

Functioning as a democracy

Israel was, is, and please God, always will

Be a safe haven for the Jewish People

Yet a country that also accommodates People of many other faiths

Taking account of all this

Israel has a right to exist

THE GRENFELL TOWER FIRE

  A COMMUNITY TRAGEDY

When a tragedy occurs,we soon realise

That many decisions

Made by politicians

Of all parties, at all levels, often prioritize Monetary factors over human lives

Eventually at sometime,somehow,somewhere

Likely one of them

Like this poem

Will haunt those individuals and lay bare

The terrible human consequences

Via the number of deaths and injuries

That should be on their consciences

The Grenfell Tower Fire was one such example

When it now seems evident to many people

That a value is placed on human life, after all

Money matters, but people matter more

That should always be at the core

Of what all politicians think, say and do

Accidents happen, but many don’t need to

For the victims and survivors of Grenfell Tower

Accountability and justice must now be our

Priority

Speedily

And if lessons are truly learned as we

Are always being told they will be

Then financial cutbacks, efficiencies and austerity

Should never again come before human safety

Let’s have no more tragedies which are avoidable

Over to the politicians now – it’s your call

FAO ALL DRIVERS & PEDESTRIANS

  NO P.O.P. (Parking On Pavements

Parking on pavements

Can cause accidents

By blocking the way ahead for people

Such as those who are disabled

And have to use a wheelchair

Now do you think that’s fair?

And if you don’t mind

Consider those who’re blind

Or pushing prams and buggies

All are then forced to squeeze

By, and if this proves to be impractical

Because of your actions, these people

Are forced out onto the road

Which of course doesn’t bode

Too well for their safety

 Because you parked illegally

The pavements are NOT for parking on

They’re there for use by ALL pedestrians

Drivers, use some common sense

And stop parking on pavements

NATIONAL POETRY DAY 28 SEPTEMBER - THE THEME IS "FREEDOM"

We’re all born with Free Will

But even today, many people

Live without, and have to fight

For their inherent human rights

The freedom to pursue their ambitions

The freedom to practice their own religion

The freedom to admit their sexual orientation

The freedom of not being forced to go hungry

The freedom of not being forced into slavery

The freedom to vote and live, under a democracy

The freedom to communicate and openly expressing their views

The freedom to walk the streets day and night, without curfews

The freedom of the media, and how they report the news

The freedom of women to dress in public, how they choose

The freedom to have any number of children with their partner

The freedom not to have their blood spilt by death or torture

The freedom not to be governed by a despotic political ruler

Here in the United Kingdom

We can enjoy these freedoms

Which worldwide are so cherished

So should never be taken for granted

This situation for me is clearly illustrated

By my freedom to have this poem published

On National Poetry Day, 28th September, the theme

Is “freedom” which for many is still a mere dream

Let’s hope and pray that soon, freedom

Is a right that’s enjoyed by everyone

LESS IS MORE

During these Yamim Noraim

I’m thinking of the maxim

“Less is more”

Thereby praying for

Less people struggling and more of them thriving

Less sickness and disease and more well-being

Less of widespread poverty and more prosperity

Less political upheaval and more political stability

Less of forced migration and refugees and more settled populations

Less of war and violence and more of peace between the nations

Less of despotic and more of democratic governments

Less of vile racist behaviour and more of tolerance

Less despair and more hope that at last this year, we can

Celebrate making progress towards peace, in our Homeland

As we’ve just started the year 5778

May we have more, not less, to celebrate

Than we did in the last year, 5777

Keep thinking

About keeping your hands where they should be

On the steering wheel

Keep handling a mobile phone and you'll likely

Injure or worse, kill

Yourself and other people

By causing an accident

That you never meant

To

Too

Late by then

DIVERSITY DEFINED

Fact - each and every one of us is unique

In the way that we look, think and speak

All that we have in common

Is that we are all human

And born into this world

As a baby boy or girl

This is the essence of diversity

From the one and only me

Who hopes likewise

That you’ll recognize

The diversity

Of my poetry

MEN 0 PAUSE - My Poem For International Women's Day 8 March 2017

Please all you men o pause

To understand the cause

Of our hot flushes and night sweats

Which for many of us women, gets

After many months, years or even decades

Usually of being or soon becoming, middle-aged

To be so uncomfortable

And perhaps worst of all

l It can be just as long before it all ends

And throughout we have to suffer men's

Barbs and sarcastic facial expressions

Yet to our female bodies, this all happens

Just so that our reproductive organs

Can successfully bear your children

In the production of which, even then

You play a very small part, o men

A little bit of sympathy wouldn’t go amiss

For we didn’t choose to be made like this

So while we get hot and bothered when menopausal

Please men o pause, and just be cool

INDIVIDUALS

We are all born with free will

Free to, or not to, kill

 Ourselves and other people

No religion, government or country in the world is to blame

For what an individual chooses to do in their own  name

So in committing an act of terrorism

The resulting carnage

That they manage

To inflict on us, is down to them

Of this campaign

Is for the government to understand

That in this country of England

St George's Day on 23 April

Should, and with your help, will

For the enjoyment of English People

Be a national holiday every year

Let's all say this loud and clear

For it's surly about time

That we came into line

With many other countries

Which enjoy such festivities

A GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

It was 50 years ago on 7th June 1967

That our beloved, holy city of Jerusalem

Was reunified and became

Rightfully, whole again And B’ezrat Hashem

 Will be ad infinitum

And also the capital city

Of Israel – our country

So it’s a very special Yom Yerushalayim Day

Which this year, we’ll celebrate on 24th May

For the Jewish People, globally

Being a truly Golden Anniversary

LETTERS

ACTION NOT WORDS

On page 4 of the Jewish News last week ( 13 April) – there were four articles about cases of anti-Semitism that recently manifested itself in our two mainstream political parties.

Two of them clearly illustrated to me the dichotomy between Labour and the Tories when it comes to dealing with this matter. “Candidate Suspended” and “Tory hopeful removed,” were the titles involved. Of course the candidate suspended referred to the Labour Party and the last paragraph of the item said “A Labour spokesperson said it would take all appropriate disciplinary action.”

The last paragraph of the other item quoted - A Tory spokesman said: “Views like this have no place in the party or society.” In the Labour Party anti-Semitism seems to be alive and kicking while in the Conservative Party where it is alive, it is kicked out.

And of course the Ken Livingstone Saga drags on!

"TWO WAYS OF TACKLING HATRED"

LIVING IN A TOLERANT COUNTRY

I’ve always been proud of being a Jew living in such a tolerant country as England. My tolerance has, however, been severely tested in the light of recent events such as:-

   · The continuing anti-Israel and anti-Semitic bias that’s so prevalent at the BBC (see items on pages 3 & 5 of the Jewish News, 22 June). This also applies to many other parts of the media.  ·

The UK Government allowing (not for the first time) the open display of Hezbollah flags (editorial on page 18 of the Jewish News, 22 June) during the recent “Al Quds” march in London. Hezbollah is a proscribed terrorist organisation in this country!

 · Ken Livingstone, despite his anti-Semitic and anti-Israel outbursts, remains a member of the Labour Party, as it continues with wholly inadequate attempts to stamp out anti-Semitism within its ranks.

 · Despite the forthcoming planned celebrations in this country and our homeland of the Balfour Declaration Centenary, still no sign of an official Royal, State visit to Israel.

This tolerant country must have “zero tolerance” to anti-Semitism and any statements or activities that call for the destruction of Israel. Since the royal family have tolerated visits to many countries that do not share our British values and way of life – surely they can go to one that definitely does – Israel.

This letter was published in the Jewish News

"THERE MUST BE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR JEW-HATRED

A PROBLEM FOR THE WHOLE WORLD- NOT JUST JEWS

In his letter “Why hate?” (JC, 22nd September), Phil Knight asks the question “Why do people hate Jews?” He doesn’t get anti-Semitism (which is a good thing), then says that as per the contents of the JC,” Jews have enough problems of their own, without us goyim adding to the mess”.

It’s true, Mr Knight that we argue vehemently with each other (and non-Jews) about almost anything, in particular disagreeing about the fundamental tenets of Judaism which we observe to varying degrees, and in different ways. The JC’s content rightly reflects the variety of viewpoints, and covers issues that we’re at odds about.

These problems and whatever mess you deem Jews to be in, are self-inflicted and part of Jewish culture. What’s more, they’re characteristics  that many of us, and non-Jews alike recognise, and can laugh about.

Anti-Semitism is prejudice against, hostility towards and hatred of Jews- the oldest form of racism. Nowdays  it often morphs into being anti-Israel, anti-Zionism and anti anything else to do with the Jewish Homeland. Anti-Semitism is inflicted upon Jews by others and has led to attempts to destroy the Jewish People and State of Israel over the millennia – the most recent being the Holocaust! Anti-Semitism, and all forms of racism, is sadly a problem for the whole world.

The two issues should never be conflated. I hope, Mr Knight, that your comments were intended to be light-hearted, but felt it necessary to put my views forward as Jew. Please, readers, feel free to disagree with me.

THE ELIZABETH LINE

THE LATE ELIZABETH LINE

I fear that with the continuing delays to Crossrail which is now called the "Elizabeth Line," should our Queen sadly depart from this world before it is opened, it may become known as the "Late Elizabeth Line!"

A Royal Family Visit To Israel!

I refer to the item on page 2 of last week’s edition (Jewish News, 9 March) under the heading “NEWS IN BRIEF” which was “RIVLIN INVITES ROYALS TO JOIN THE BALFOUR CELEBRATIONS”.

Maybe a brief item but this would be a massive statement by the Foreign Office and Monarchy, that they finally recognize Israel as worthy of a Royal Visit at this propitious time in her history.

In support of the Queen and Prince Phillip going to one of the only countries in the Middle East and world that they not been to OFFICIALLY, I refer to the saying by the Rabbinic Sage Hillel The Elder “If not now, then when” (Ethics of the Fathers/Pirkei Avot).

NOW WAT (Worth A Thought)

On the BBC News at 22.00 Tuesday 29 March Sarah Smith, the Scottish BBC Reporter, made an interesting comment. She concluded her piece on the issue of a second referendum on Scottish Independence, by asking “how Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon could pursue it in discussions with the UK Prime Minister Theresa May, if the latter refuses to talk about it with her?”

In that vein, I would ask “how can any Israeli Leader enter into negotiations, and engage in any form of discussion, with Palestinian and many of the Middle East Arab Leaders, who do not recognize the State of Israel. Some worse still – are committed to wiping Israel off the map and seeking to kill all Jews in Israel?

POEMS

The Holocaust And Genocides - My Poem

NEVER AGAIN

After Holocaust Memorial Day

I believe the only way

That we can be sure

To never again endure

Another holocaust or genocide

Is if people finally decide

To bury their hatred

Instead of the dead

Hatred has lead to the destruction

Many times, of a whole generation

Of people, and will again

If we allow it to remain

With us, just the same

There’s power in words, for certain

But they have to be acted upon

To achieve their aim

Of “never again”

THE WEATHER & MY POEM

The Cold weather brought record low temperatures, beyond belief

This week to Great Britain

Hopefully, from next week, we’ll all get some well-deserved relief

From such Arctic conditions

Hopefully, the quid pro quo for this month of February, just gone

Will be

A record hot, barbecue Summer, which we can all reflect upon

With glee

Whatever spring, summer and autumn in 2018, have in store for us

One thing’s for sure

We British folk can be relied upon, like a broken record, to discuss

The weather for evermore

MY POEM FOR ISRAEL'S 70th BIRTHDAY

LET’S KVELL, OVER ISRAEL

Now  it’s been ” three score years and ten” since that iconic date

In modern, Jewish history

When part of our biblical homeland, became the new Israeli State

In the 20th Century

On 14th May 1948, the Declaration of Independence by David Ben-Gurion, took

Few people by surprise

But encircled by enemies ready to attack her and, the sea, the omens didn’t look

Good, for her to survive

Who’d have ever thought, that the nascent Jewish nation would last this long

Very few people, back then

Yet the tenacity, ingenuity, and audacity of Israelis, proved the doubters wrong

And she’s thrived, Baruch Hashem

So to our beloved Israel, at just 70 years young, Yom Huledet Sameach

From a proud, British Jew

May the next 70 years and beyond, bring more naches to us all, but much

More importantly, peace to you

THE HOT WEATHER AND WORLD CUP

THE ENGLISH SUMMER 2018

Is there anybody out there who can tell me what is going on?

We’re in England, for heaven’s sake – I’m all confused.com

Day after day, even week after week, it is hot and sunny

Dry, blue skies overhead, with rainfall a distant memory

Barbeques are gainfully employed in cooking

With the food and temperatures all sizzling

It is flaming June alright with air conditioning all the rage

In the World Cup, England have got through the group stage

However, this is England, so my head’s all in a daze

Well at least for a few days longer

England can stay and play in Russia

We can enjoy this weekend weather and still dream

That we’ll be in the World cup final on Sunday July 15

Let us hope that once the children break up from school

Our summer demeanour, and the weather, doesn’t cool

Down, or at the very least, the sun

Keeps shining throughout Wimbledon

So as we now approach the end of June

I hope that I haven’t spoken too soon

So it’s P for People that we must all choose

Life and health are the most precious assets

That at birth, each human being ever gets

Their lifelong medical needs should be Paramount

To the operations of the whole NHS throughout

The country

Unfailingly

Since the mantra’s of Partial Privatisation and Profitability

Have been actively Pursued

In recent decades, by the various Powers that be

Many People rightly conclude

That the NHS is, sadly, no longer fit for Purpose

According to our hearts, minds and the rest of us

Our NHS should be fully funded and staffed

As well as being freed from the current raft

Of targets, bureaucracy and wastage

By dint of which it has managed

To become so seriously infected

That in reality it can’t be expected

To survive for many more years

Unless it is Properly treated

Now

The NHS must be Properly organised,

Otherwise, even more People’s lives

Will be blighted or worse still, lost

That’s surely an unacceptable cost

To bear

So to those involved, Please Preserve our NHS

And make a start to immediately address

The flaws in, and causes of, the ongoing crises

That includes the leaders of our political parties

And then agree to implement solutions, which it badly needs

So that the NHS no longer bleeds

To a slow and painful death

And draws its last breath

Our NHS ought not to be

On life support, permanently

So having reached age 70

Let’s hope that this cherished organisation

Puts back “P” for People, and duly lives on

THE ENGLISH SUMMER 2018

WHAT A SCORCHER!

This summer of 2018, will live long in the memory

For being, for so long, hot, humid, dry and sunny

With rain in England having been, a rarity

The ground everywhere, is parched

As any greenery is disappearing, fast

The “Beast From the East” and that awful winter

Of 2017/ 2018

Seems to have been

Long ago, from a completely different era

So let’s enjoy, and not moan, about this summer

Since before too long, autumn and then, winter

Will come round

And the sound

Of the wind, howling

And the rain, falling

Will be all-consuming

Even frost, ice, sleet and snow

Could once again be on show

The days are already getting shorter

And the nights, while sultry – longer

All too soon, December will be upon us

And the odds of a White Xmas

Together with another “big freeze”

Will be quoted by the Bookies

And the summer of 2018

By then

Will surely have been

Long forgotten

So enjoy this scorcher

Of an English summer

The heatwave will eventually pass

Just keep your cool, while it lasts
